Esdevium Games sent us this Frozen 6-in-1 Games box set, and we were quite excited! S loves Frozen, and she’s just getting into the idea of playing board games and things like that, so this was sure to be a winner.
The six games included in the set are:
- Dominoes
- Four-in-a-row
- Matching Pairs
- Bingo
- Go Fish
- Crazy 8’s
S is pretty much obsessed with the Dominoes at the moment; she spends a lot of time with De Af playing.
In fact, she won the first game she played – and my sister informed me sheepishly that no, she hadn’t just let her win!
The four-in-a-row game is also very popular, despite having rules I thought S might find a little complicated!
The ideas is that you spin the spinner and put one of your coloured counters onto the board either on one of the characters or a shape. If you hit “Take 1 Away” you can remove one of your opponent’s counters. The object of the game is to get four of your counters in a row on the board. S hasn’t quite grasped this yet, but enjoys the part where you spin the wheel and find the shape or the character!
Do I need to explain to you how the Matching Pairs game works? I’m hoping not!
For the Bingo game, rather than numbers you match pictures. Each person has a card (on the left) and you take it in turns to pick up a picture card (on the right). All players check to see if they have that picture on their card, and if they have it, they cover it with a counter (from the Four-in-a-row game above).
The final two games, Go Fish and Crazy 8’s are played with the same pack of cards. The cards are divided into colour rather than suit, and each has a character from Frozen:
So far S has not been very interested in learning the rules to either of these games, so instead we’ve settled for playing Snap with them!
I love that there are so many different games to play in one small box; it means you can get a lot of use out of it before a game becomes boring or old hat – especially as S is growing and learning as she goes, so that with something like the card games, it’ll be a while before she starts playing them. The fact it’s Frozen-themed is a massive hit with her, and I love that the characters feature so prominently and in such different ways through each of the games.
The true test came last week when S’s friend L came to play after nursery. It had been a while since she’d been for a play date, and S has recently had her bedroom converted into a toy room – which meant lots more space for toys. They spent half an hour in the toy room before coming downstairs with the Frozen box, asking if we could all play Matching Pairs together. File under massive win I think!
