According to a reecnt survey commissioned by Great British Bingo, our favourite British celebrity is… *drumroll*

favourite British celebrity

Stephen Fry!

It’s hardly surprising really; Fry seems to have become one of those “national treasure” candidates who’s just always been around. Nobody I’ve spoken to can recall the time they first became aware of him. Was it in Jeeves & WoosterA Bit of Fry & Laurie? Or perhaps as Melchett in Blackadder? Wherever it was, I don’t know anyone who dislikes him. Comedies, dramas, documentaries, theatre, radio, video games, books, Twitter, cameo appearances, and of course his latest incarnation as panel show host on QI alongside sidekick Alan Davies. What I love about him is that he’s so inclusive. He’s clearly a very intelligent man but he doesn’t talk down to people or judge them because they’re not celebrities. He’s famously a big fan of Twitter, where he talks to anyone who has something interesting to say, and has been in lots of TV shows that many people of his stature might consider to be a little “low brow” for them.

What made me laugh about the survey was that David Beckham came second, and the Queen came third! Fourth was Simon Cowell, which is an odd one – and fifth was Bob Monkhouse, who’s been dead more than a decade. Other popular celebrities were more obvious: Cheryl Cole, David Tennant, Katie Price, Jimmy Carr. But Frankie Boyle and Helen Mirren also made the list. I don’t know about you, but I find it hard to imagine Simon Cowell or Frankie Boyle being anyone’s favourite anything! Is that just me?

I think these surveys are always a sign of the times, aren’t they. If it had been done during the 2012 Olympics, Mo Farrah might have been at the top. Right after Wimbledon in that year, and Andy Murray would definitely have been top. During the Jubilee celebrations, and Her Royal Highness would not be languishing at number 3!
