Travelling when you have a medical condition can be tricky; there are so many other things to consider before you set off to enjoy some time away.
Here are some tips for travelling with a medical condition.
Consider your destination
If your condition could be made worse by weather, temperature or other environments, it’s important to bear this in mind when choosing where you’ll go.
Inform travel companies
These days travel companies are much better at helping people with a medical condition with their travel. Many will need advance notice to get things in place though so it’s always worth speaking to each company and making sure they will have everything ready
Travel insurance
It’s important to make sure you are insured when travelling. Travel insurance for existing medical conditions is important as standard travel insurance may not cover you should something happen. It’s important to disclose any pre existing medical condition when purchasing insurance, to make sure you will be covered sufficiently.
Plan ahead
If you are worried about the potential for needing medical assistance whilst away, it’s worth researching this before you leave – if only to put your mind at rest. Google Earth can be a great resource in terms of figuring out how to find your nearest medical facilities, what the building looks like and so on.
Learn key phrases
If you’re visiting a country that doesn’t speak English, it’s worth making sure you know key phrases relating to your condition. These can be kept written down in a phone note or note book – something to help you explain to doctors or hotel staff what your condition entails, what assistance you need and so on.
Travelling with an existing medical condition requires a little extra planning, but with the right support and planning in place you can go ahead and have a fantastic holiday.
