A while back a friend brought me a big bag of apples from the tree in her garden. You can’t beat a proper, organic apple that’s come straight from the tree; most apples in supermarkets have been frozen and then defrosted before making their way to the shelves so there’s a big difference between a supermarket apple and one you get straight from the tree! Finding myself with tons of apples in the house, I researched different recipes to do with them.
Here are 7 things you can do with apples:
1. Stewed apples
I love stewed apples, and there’s no end to what you can do with them. I like to stew up a big batch of them with some cinnamon, put them into S’s old wearning pots and freeze them. One pot is just the perfect amount to add to a batch of pancakes or porridge in the mornings. Not to mention spread on toast, used as apple sauce in a meal, plopped into a bowl of custard… Yum!
2. Porridge
What if you want to make porridge, but you’ve run out of stewed apples? No problem! Simply slice or grate an apple straight into your porridge!
3. Mincemeat
Mincemeat is really wasy to make and great to make with children. If you have a slow cooker, check out our recipe for slow cooker mincemeat too. You don’t even need to peel the apples; it’s so easy!
4. Add them to bread
I love this recipe for Quick Apple Bread or there’s a brilliant recipe in Jack Monroe’s book Cooking on a Bootstrap.
5. Add apples to salad
I’m really into the whole sweet/savoury thing, so apples in salad is the perfect combination for me!
6. Apple cake
There is a fantastic recipe for apple cake in Jack Monroe’s first book, A Girl Called Jack. It’s one of the easiest recipes in the world and S enjoys joining in with making them.
7. Apple Crumble
Durr, of course! you can’t beat a good, hearty apple crumble! S loves apple crumble with custard, and so do I! Does anyone not like apple crumble?!
Of course, even with all of these ideas, we still have lots of apples to use up – so if you have any suggestions for great apple recipes do please leave a comment below!
